5 steps to get started in snowmobiling
Interested in joining the 3 million people who already enjoy snowmobiling each year, but don't know how to get started? Follow these five simple steps to get started in snowmobiling for a fun-filled winter with family and friends.
  1. Attend a snowmobiling show
A snowmobiling show is a great place to start if you're just discovering snowmobiling. Attending a snowmobiling show allows you to check out different models and brands of snowmobiles and talk to numerous dealers, so you can get the best deal! Visit www.gosnowmobiling.org to find shows in your area.
  2. Visit a dealer
There are 1,840 licensed snowmobile dealers in the United States and 1154 in Canada who can help you decide which snowmobile is best for you, based on your planned usage and within your price range. Snowmobile pricing starts at $2,000 for a used model and $6,000 for a new one.
  3. Licensing
Every snowmobile state and province requires your snowmobile to be licensed or registered or have a permit affixed to the snowmobile. Licensing information can be easily obtained through your state or provincial snowmobile association and through your local state Natural Resource office or highway department. Requirements vary from state to state or province to province.
  4. Find a location to snowmobile
There are 225,000 miles of marked and groomed trails to explore in North America. The state/provincial snowmobile associations will put you in touch with a local club familiar with a trail system and riding area near you. The state/provincial natural resource department also has access to trail and riding maps, as well as the local visitors and convention bureaus, and chambers of commerce in the regions you snowmobile.

Rent a snowmobile and see if the favorite winter activity is right for you
If you've ridden a snowmobile, you've probably already discovered that snowmobiling is the perfect activity to enjoy during the winter months with family and friends. For those who haven't tried snowmobiling before, it's time to test drive one and determine if snowmobiling is right for you. Renting is the perfect way to do just that. You'll learn that operating a snowmobile is less difficult than you may think.

Renting a snowmobile is a great way to establish your comfort and skill level. There are numerous rental agencies throughout North America conveniently located near groomed trails, vast snow lands, lodges and resorts which rent snowmobiles. Some rental agents will even deliver the snowmobiles to your snowy paradise, ready for you to enjoy. Not only will the agency provide you with a snowmobile, but all the necessary snowmobile equipment and warm gear to fully give you a taste of the snowmobiling lifestyle.

Many ski resorts across North America now offer snowmobile renting, along with all the essential gear to hit the trails and have some fun. These resorts are discovering that snowmobiling is one of the most popular winter activities. Prices for renting vary by rental agent and duration.

According to a recent study by the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association (ISMA), 50 percent of all North American adults would like to go snowmobiling. When outdoor enthusiasts were asked to rate their desire to go snowmobiling on a scale of 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest), most showed a huge interest, choosing the number 9.

The Go Snowmobiling Web site, www.gosnowmobiling.org, has a searchable database of 346 locations in the United States and Canada that rent snowmobiles. The database allows consumers to narrow down their search by state or province. The Web site a great way for the inexperienced snowmobiler to get information about renting, dealers, tips on getting started and locations to snowmobile.

Take a Friend Snowmobiling!

The snowmobile community is excited to announce Take a Friend Snowmobiling Week, which will be held February 14-22, 2009. This elongated week celebrates friends and family snowmobiling for nine days, including two weekends. The snowmobile week was introduced to go hand-in-hand with the Take a Friend Snowmobiling campaign, which has been developed to encourage all of us to take our non-snowmobiling friends out snowmobiling.

Clubs are encouraged to participate in the activity and try to hold a special day or weekend encouraging members to bring non-snowmobiling friends to the clubhouse to go for a short ride and discover what snowmobilers do during the winter.

As a special incentive to take non-snowmobilers snowmobiling, the manufacturers will give away a new snowmobile to a lucky individual who registers online and participates in the Take a Friend Snowmobiling Week event. To register, visit www.gosnowmobiling.org. If a club organizes an event, participating club members, guests and the club are all able to register to win.

So plan on taking part in participating in Take a Friend Snowmobiling Week, February 14-22, 2009. Remember to register online and take advantage of this opportunity to win a new snowmobile and have fun doing it.
